What's hAPPening in Chemistry

What's hAPPening SCARTIES! We are the Strathclyde Chemistry App Review Team (you can call us SCART) and we are here to give reviews on all the leading chemistry apps. We consist of 3 chemistry undergrads from the University of Strathclyde ~ so we know our stuff. We have collated information from students, teachers and researchers to create the perfect list of criteria to review chemistry apps so you don't have to! We have chosen to create a blog to review chemistry apps because it is an easily accessible format for everyone to read. Each app review will be published as a separate post and these posts will be categorised by the functions of each app where we will outline our recommendations regarding who should use the app. From this all the apps for the relevant function, level or field of chemistry can be searched within our blog to find an app that best meets their needs. Criteria 1. Ease of use /5 - Is the app laid out well? Is it simple to use? Does i

Our Final Thoughts

Hello again SCARTies, for the last time ever from the OG founders😭😭 Over the last four weeks, we have managed to review a wide range of chemistry apps from addicting chemistry games to advanced chemical structure building apps – allowing us to build a solid rapport of the apps that are available on each software platform. It has been an enjoyable process witnessing over 650 of you joining the gang   and visiting the SCART blog, and nursing our baby Instagram page to over 50 followers - something we are very proud of considering our short time-frame. Generally from the apps we have reviewed we can say that chemistry content in all apps is generally really informative and accurate. With such a large number of apps available, we expected to see a lot of well functioning apps with aesthetic interface but this actually hasn't been the case. For this reason the apps we have reviewed tends to be the ones that we've been able to use with little difficulty. There are so many gap

KingDraw Chemical Structure Editor

KingDraw Chemical Structure Editor Available on iOS and Android Free KingDraw chemical structure editor is a chemical molecular drawing app that allows users to view and create molecular structures and reactions on the go. Screen Recording Screenshots Criteria Ease of Use – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Accessibility – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Graphics – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Performance – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Content – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Relevance – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ User Reviews – 4.7 SCART notes: The app is clean, simple and laid out well. It includes a short tutorial the first time you open the app explaining how to use all of the features. The app looks and feels similar to ChemDraw (a popular molecule editor used by chemists) and shares many useful features such as the clean-up structure feature and a feature to add pre-made molecules. The app advertises that it has a cloud function along with a desktop program so you can edit molecules on your mobile device and view them on your desktop and vice ver

Pocket Notes - GCSE Science

Pocket Notes – GCSE Chemistry Available only on Apple devices Free Pocket Notes – GCSE Science is an app spefically target for GCSE level students(funnily enough) for revision purposes only. It provides notes on all areas of the GCSE Chemistry, Physics and Biology curriculum but we are just going to review the chemistry bits. Screenshots Criteria E ase of Ease of use  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Accessibility  ⭐⭐ Graphics   ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ App Performance   ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Content  ⭐⭐ Relevance   ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ User Reviews  4.5 /5 SCART notes: The level of content provided by this app is just enough. Separate explanations could be provided to cater for students who require a different way to look at fundamental ideas. In saying this, the app is extremely useful for its intended purpose – revision for GCSE Chemistry students. The notes are very clearly laid out in a logical way and are colourful/easy to read. However, the app is not available to

Chemtrix

Chemtrix Available on Apple devices Chemtrix is an exciting molecule building game app which as you work through the 24 levels you learn more about how atoms bond and the structures and properties of the molecules that you make. Screenshots Screen Recording Criteria E ase of Us e – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Accessibility – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Graphics – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐⭐ Performance – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Content – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Relevance – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ User Reviews – 4.5 / 5 SCART notes: We have found this app to be a very fun and addictive game to have on your phone. With its simplistic yet effective layout and its speedy boot up and performance speeds it is far from a nuisance to mess about with. Although it thrives in these aspects of the app, it falls short in the scope and depth of content involved. The levels do get harder from the start and the app does introduce more complex organic molecules however we feel there is a point in this app where the difficulty d

Chemistry AR (BETA)

Chemistry AR (BETA) Available on Android Free Chemistry AR is an app that uses your device's camera and printed element cards to show you an augmented reality representation of how the elements bond and information on the compound. When you open the app your camera opens and you can place these element cards in the view of your camera to show an AR element animation on top of the cards. If you bring two cards together that can bond, the elements will bond on your screen. Once a compound has formed you can place the information card near the compound to see more information about the reaction. As this app is in beta (still being developed) ther

Chemical Detectives

Chemical Detectives Available on iOS and Android Free Chemical Detectives is a spectroscopy quiz app in which you are given the spectroscopic data for a molecule and you have to work out the molecule being represented.
