SCART notes: The app is clean, simple and laid out well. It includes a short tutorial the first time you open the app explaining how to use all of the features. The app looks and feels similar to ChemDraw (a popular molecule editor used by chemists) and shares many useful features such as the clean-up structure feature and a feature to add pre-made molecules. The app advertises that it has a cloud function along with a desktop program so you can edit molecules on your mobile device and view them on your desktop and vice versa. However, we were not able to create a cloud account during the time of testing. This is a problem as the only way to use the created molecules is to email yourself the file and open it in their desktop program (which is in Chinese and hard to use). From here you can copy and paste it into Word, PowerPoint etc. or export it into another molecule editor like ChemDraw for further editing.

SCART recommendation: Overall this app is great for drawing chemical molecules and reactions and could be used by chemists and chemistry students of all levels and fields. However, the process of transferring structures from the app is challenging and at the moment limits its functionality.

Separate explanations could be provided to cater for students who require a different way to look at fundamental ideas. In saying this, the app is extremely useful for its intended purpose – revision for GCSE Chemistry students. The notes are very clearly laid out in a logical way and are colourful...

The scope of content included on each element is detailed and laid out in a modern and aesthetically pleasing app. The app however has some flaws which make it more difficult to use than other periodic table apps such as 'Periodic' (which has been reviewed already - go check it out!) where the app can be used in landscape...

Chemtrix

Chemtrix Available on Apple devices Chemtrix is an exciting molecule building game app which as you work through the 24 levels you learn more about how atoms bond and the structures and properties of the molecules that you make. With its simplistic yet effective layout and its speedy boot up and performance speeds it is far from a nuisance to mess about with. Although it thrives in these aspects of the app, it falls short in the scope and depth of content involved. The levels do get harder from the start and the app does introduce more complex organic molecules however we feel there is a point in this app where the difficulty d...
